Excursions in Sicily: ‘must’ itineraries
During your stay in Sicily, you will literally be spoiled for choice about what to do, what to see or where to go. Precisely for this reason, we have prepared excursions for you, selecting the most popular destinations.
You can visit the small medieval village of Erice, a mountain village where time seems to have stopped, surrounded by nature, mystery and legend. You will have plenty of time to visit the mighty Castello di Venere (The Castle of Venus), the wonderful Belvedere overlooking the Gulf of Trapani, Valderice, which from a distance allows you to see the Egadi Islands. You can stroll through the streets of the centre to browse and buy local crafts or savour an excellent Genovese, a dessert made of shortcrust pastry and custard.
You will have the opportunity to visit Marsala with its Cathedral in Piazza della Repubblica, the ancient church of Purgatory in the Baroque and Norman style, Porta Garibaldi and Porta Nuova, the historic entrances to the city. A little further away there is also the small Phoenician islet of Mozia, or Mothia, where you can see the necropolis, the Cappiddazzu Sanctuary and the Tofet up close. Finally, you can pay a visit to the Marsala salt pans, participating in the salt harvest or getting lost in the midst of the salt dunes or ponds.
Segesta is one of the most beautiful spots that merits a visit. The Archaeological Park will take you on a journey through time, up to the year 1000 BC, showing you the majesty of its Greek temples. One of these is the Great Temple, originally a religious building, which is incomplete still today. You can also visit the Shrine of Contrata Mango or the Hellenistic Theatre, still in operation today.
Another destination of great importance is the famous Selinunte, the oldest Archaeological Park in Europe. You will have the opportunity to see the 7 areas of the site, divided into Acropolis, the Pianoro di Manuzza, the Collina Orientale Sanctuary, the Collina del Gaggera, the Artisan District, the Byzantine Baptistery and finally the Cusa Quarries . A truly indescribable sight.
Last but not least, we suggest a visit to the famous city of Palermo, a city full of churches, monuments and works of art of immense value, where history and modernity go hand in hand and where there are no cultural barriers. You can visit the Ballarò Market, the Cathedral, Villa Bonanno, the English Gardens, the Massimo Theatre, the Politeama Theatre, the Quattro Canti Square or the Pretoria Fountain. During the same trip, you will also visit Monreale, whose cathedral was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2015.
